Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s image has been a fire brand since student politics. He has had an old association with controversies as well, but it has not made much impact in the electoral arena. Singh has been a continuous MP since 1999.

In 1990, the BJP was giving edge to the Ram Mandir movement in UP, at the same time a name was making headlines in Ayodhya-Gonda. This name was- student leader and local contractor Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

In the 1991 elections, BJP decided to give ticket to 34-year-old Brij Bhushan from Gonda Lok Sabha. At that time, 34 criminal cases were registered against Brij Bhushan, on which there was a lot of ruckus and BJP defended it.

Brij Bhushan managed to reach Parliament with the help of Ram Mandir. After this, his political graph did not increase much, but Brij Bhushan made a strong dominance in Gonda, Kaiserganj, Shravasti, Bahraich.

In 2011, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh also became the President of Indian Wrestling Association while being a Member of Parliament. Singh was elected the president of the union for the third time in 2019, but since January 2023, this post has become a cause of controversies for him.

Singh has been accused of sexual harassment by female wrestlers. Wrestlers say that the entire Sports Ministry is working to save Singh. Since Singh comes from politics, politics also started on this and Congress has targeted BJP.

Big leaders including Brij Bhushan kept silence
In the midst of the strike and protest by the wrestlers, the big leaders of the BJP, including the Sports Minister, have kept silence. Brij Bhushan Singh has also not given any statement to the media for the last three days. Last time he called the strike of wrestlers a conspiracy.

Congress and opposition parties are besieging the BJP and the government in the Brij Bhushan Singh case. Former Chief Minister of Haryana Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that it is a matter of great regret that international level players who have brought laurels to the country have to sit on dharna, they should get justice.

Despite the opposition of wrestlers and political pressure, questions are being raised on BJP due to no action being taken on Brij Bhushan Sharan. The BJP had removed MJ Akbar, a minister in the Modi government, from the post on allegations of sexual harassment.

1. Brij Bhushan’s case is related to Sports Association- Brij Bhushan’s case is related to Sports Association. Wrestling Federation is an autonomous non-governmental body. They have their own constitution and the Sports Ministry cannot interfere.

However, at the behest of the Sports Ministry, the Sports Federation of India had formed a committee, whose report has also come. BJP is waiting for the report and action. That is, in simple words, BJP is in a position of wait and watch in Brij Bhushan case.

Since the matter has also gone to the Supreme Court, the party does not want to make any comment before the decision comes, so that it may have to face the gritty matter.

2. Direct interference on 5 Lok Sabha seats – Brij Bhushan Singh is currently the Lok Sabha MP from Kaiserganj in UP. Brij Bhushan of Dabangg Chhavi is MP for 5 consecutive times. In 1991, he won the first Lok Sabha election.

After this, he won consecutively in the elections of 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019. Brij Bhushan’s wife Ketki Singh won the 1996 election. He was denied ticket after the case was registered under TADA.

Singh has a direct hold on 5 Lok Sabha seats in UP. These include Gonda, Bahraich, Dumariyaganj, Kaiserganj and Shravasti seats. Singh has been an MP from Gonda, Kaiserganj and Balrampur (now Shravasti).

Singh, who has won 5 elections on BJP ticket, left the party in 2009 and has also won the Kaiserganj seat on SP ticket. That is, even the change of party did not affect his victory.

This is also believed to be a major reason for not taking action against them. Less than a year is left for the Lok Sabha elections. Out of the 5 seats on which Brij Bhushan is considered to be in control, 4 seats are currently with the BJP, while BSP won in Shravasti.

Confessed to murder on camera, but acquitted in the case
During the UP assembly elections in the year 2022, a video of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh became very viral on social media. In the video, Singh told the journalist – I have committed only one murder in my life. That too of the person who shot Ravindra.

This case pertains to 1983 and after leaving student politics, Singh and his associates used to do contract work around Ayodhya and Gonda. Singh’s two friends Ravindra Singh, Awadhesh Singh, all three always lived together.

According to Singh, all three of us went to a panchayat for contract work, where I was talking to Kinkar. During the conversation, a person named Ranjit of Harrayya fired in the air. Due to the firing, Ravindra got shot and he fell on the ground.

I immediately took out my rifle and killed the man. Brij Bhushan has been acquitted by the court in this case.

Ruckus created on getting ticket, won by 1 lakh votes
After joining BJP in 1988, Brij Bhushan created a lot of atmosphere in Ayodhya, Gonda and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the issue of Ram Mandir started echoing in the politics of the country and Uttar Pradesh.

BJP gave ticket to Brij Bhushan from Gonda seat in 1991 elections. At that time, 34 criminal cases were registered against Brij Bhushan. When a lot of questions were raised on giving tickets, the leaders of the party told Robin Hood of Gonda.

Singh won his first election by a margin of 1.13 lakh votes. Not only this, Brij Bhushan was given the command of Lal Krishna Advani’s Rath Yatra after winning from Gonda.

Name linked to Dawood, BJP suspended him
In 1996, Brij Bhushan also became difficult for BJP troubled by LK Advani’s name appearing in the hawala scandal. Warrant issued against Brij Bhushan from TADA court. He was accused that Dawood is in contact with Ibrahim and gives shelter to his people at his place.

BJP immediately issued an order to expel Brij Bhushan from the party. However, his wife was given a ticket in the next election. In 1996, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the Prime Minister for 13 days, he wrote a letter to Brij Bhushan who was in jail.

In the letter, Vajpayee advised Brij Bhushan to take inspiration from Savarkar. In later days, Brij Bhushan was acquitted by the court in this case and became active in BJP politics.

Manmohan’s government was saved by cross voting
In 2008, the Left and the BJP together presented a no-confidence motion against the Manmohan Singh government in the nuclear deal case. At that time UPA had the declared support of only 226 MPs.

Meanwhile, the SP announced to support the Manmohan Singh government. Amar Singh, close to Mulayam Singh, took the responsibility of gathering support on his shoulders, after which 8 BJP MPs rebelled.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was also included in these 8 MPs. The UPA government was saved because of cross voting. Taking action, BJP expelled Brij Bhushan from the party. The party said that all these MPs were involved in the vote for cash scam.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh joined SP after being expelled from BJP. However, after 5 years, he got disillusioned with SP and then went back to BJP.

SP gave the symbol, yet joined BJP
Brij Bhushan joined Samajwadi Party in 2008 after disillusionment with BJP. The party gave him ticket from Kaiserganj seat. Singh also won. In 2012, SP also formed the government in the state.

Meanwhile, SP started preparing for 2014 and started distributing symbols on the winning seat. SP announced the name of Brij Bhushan Sharan for Kaiserganj. A few days after getting ticket from SP, Singh joined BJP.

The then President Rajnath Singh played a big role in bringing Singh back to the BJP at that time.

What has the Sports Authority said in the whole matter?
Shiv Sharma, Deputy Director General of Sports Federation of India, came to meet the wrestlers protesting on Monday. He said that the committee has submitted its report to the Sports Ministry and we have stopped the election of the wrestling association. Shiv Sharma told that at present a committee will be constituted for the supervision and work of the wrestling association.

However, Sharma did not give any information about what is in the report of the committee formed to investigate the sexual harassment. The wrestlers said that a complaint should be lodged against Brij Bhushan and he should be arrested. Until this action is not taken, we will not get up from the dharna.

The Supreme Court sought a report from the Delhi government
An application was filed in the Supreme Court demanding registration of an FIR against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The court, after hearing, said that the Delhi government should provide the report in the whole matter. The matter is serious, so a notice is also being sent to the police.

The court said that the identity of the women wrestlers making the complaint should be kept secret. The report related to sexual harassment should be submitted in a sealed cover. The next hearing will be on Friday (April 28).
